Have you ever done something you were deeply ashamed of \u2014 something that made you wonder if you\u2019d gone too far, strayed too long, or burned too many bridges to ever find your way back to God? If so, I want you to sit with this parable for a few minutes. Not as a Bible lesson, but as a personal letter written just for you. Because the story Jesus tells in Luke 15 isn\u2019t really about a rebellious son at all. It\u2019s about a Father whose love has no expiration date.<\/p>\n
The story opens with a jarring request. A younger son walks up to his father and essentially says, \u201cI wish you were dead \u2014 give me my inheritance now.\u201d In the culture of Jesus\u2019 day, this was one of the most shameful things a child could do. And yet, the father gives it to him. No lecture. No conditions. Just grace extended, even before it was deserved.<\/p>\n
The son takes everything and wastes it \u2014 every last coin<\/em> \u2014 on reckless living. And then the money runs out. He finds himself in a foreign land, feeding pigs, starving, and utterly alone. Luke 15:17 says something that should resonate with all of us:<\/p>\n \u201cBut when he came to himself, he said, \u2018How many of my father\u2019s hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger!’\u201d (Luke 15:17, ESV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n There\u2019s a moment in every wandering heart when the fog begins to lift. When reality sets in. When we come to ourselves<\/em>. That moment of clarity \u2014 that Holy Spirit nudge that whispers, this isn\u2019t who you are, and this isn\u2019t where you belong<\/em> \u2014 is often the very first step back home.<\/p>\n This is where the parable becomes breathtaking. The son rehearses his speech the whole way home. He\u2019s ready to beg. Ready to be a servant. He doesn\u2019t expect to be a son anymore \u2014 he\u2019s forfeited that, or so he thinks. But look at what happens when he gets close:<\/p>\n \u201cBut while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.\u201d (Luke 15:20, ESV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n The father was watching<\/em>. He saw his son \u201cwhile he was still a long way off.\u201d That means this father had been scanning the horizon \u2014 day after day \u2014 hoping, waiting, longing. And the moment he saw his child, he didn\u2019t walk calmly to the door. He ran<\/strong>. In the ancient Near East, a dignified man of means did not run. But this father threw dignity aside for the sake of his child.<\/p>\n That is your Heavenly Father. He is not sitting in heaven with crossed arms, waiting to see if you\u2019ve suffered enough. He is watching for you. And the moment you turn back toward Him, He is already running to meet you.<\/p>\n The son barely gets his rehearsed speech out before the father interrupts him with celebration. A robe. A ring. Sandals. A feast. These weren\u2019t just nice gestures \u2014 they were symbols of full restoration of sonship. The father wasn\u2019t saying, \u201cI\u2019ll tolerate you back.\u201d He was saying, \u201cYou are fully mine again.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cFor this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.\u201d (Luke 15:24, ESV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n God\u2019s forgiveness isn\u2019t reluctant. It isn\u2019t stingy. The Apostle Paul echoes this beautifully when he writes:<\/p>\n \u201cIn him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace.\u201d (Ephesians 1:7, ESV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Notice that word \u2014 riches<\/em>. God doesn\u2019t forgive us from a place of scarcity. He forgives lavishly, joyfully, and completely.<\/p>\n So what does this parable mean for you on a Tuesday afternoon, or a sleepless Sunday night? Here are a few practical ways to let this story sink deep into your daily walk:<\/p>\n 1. Stop postponing your return.<\/strong> You don\u2019t need to clean yourself up before coming to God. You come as you are \u2014 He does the cleaning. The son didn\u2019t shower before heading home. He came in his pig-pen clothes.<\/p>\n 2. Reject the lie of \u201ctoo far gone.\u201d<\/strong> The enemy loves to whisper that you\u2019ve sinned too greatly, waited too long, or wandered too far. Scripture says otherwise: \u201cIf we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness\u201d<\/em> (1 John 1:9, ESV). All means all.<\/p>\n 3. Receive restoration, not just rescue.<\/strong> God isn\u2019t just saving you from something \u2014 He\u2019s restoring you to<\/em> something. To relationship. To purpose. To identity as a beloved child of the King.<\/p>\n Wherever you are today \u2014 whether you feel close to God or a million miles away \u2014 the door is open. The Father is watching the road. And the moment you take that first step toward Him, He is already on His feet, moving toward you with arms wide open. You are not a burden to Him. You are not a disappointment beyond repair. You are His<\/em> \u2014 and He wants you home.<\/p>\n Don\u2019t wait another day. Come home.<\/p>\n Jehovah, Jesus Christ, Holy Michael \u2014 thank You for a love that runs toward us before we even finish our apologies. For every heart reading this today that feels far away, lost, or ashamed \u2014 let them feel Your arms around them right now. Remind them that they are not too far gone, that Your grace is bigger than their mistakes, and that their seat at Your table is still waiting. Give them the courage to take one step toward home today, trusting that You will meet them on the road.
